Factors to consider when choosing the right computer

  • Cost
Desktop
With customizable components to suit everyone’s needs, desktops can range up to a high price, however, a standard package can be as low as a few hundred dollars.
Laptop
Compared to desktop, laptops have a more limited range of customization, many laptops that tend to be more powerful range from a little over $2,000 to higher.

  • Portability
Desktop
Desktops tend to be larger in size and less convenient to bring around. Desktops are meant to stay stationary, and not for portability.
Laptop
Laptops have a smaller size, which tend to be more portable compared to desktops. One can easily fit a laptop into their backpack or case and move around.

  • Processor
Desktop
Processors for desktops are larger as well, which results in processors being more powerful compared to processors in laptops. The latest processors are usually available for desktop first as well!
Laptop
Regular laptop processors are still limited compared to desktop processors. However, there are gaming laptops that perform like a desktop, with a higher cost.

  • Internal Storage
Desktop
Desktops usually have multiple internal drives.
Laptop
Laptops usually have one internal drive. To incorporate more storage, the storage drive must be replaced.

  • External Storage
Desktop
Desktops can connect to many external drives as long as there are available data ports.
Laptop
Laptops can connect to external drives, but only at a lesser amount as there are few available ports.

  • Ease of Assembly
Desktop
There are a lot more steps and space required for setting up a desktop. Although it is not difficult, it does require more than compared to a laptop.
Laptop
Laptops are generally easy to use, all you have to do is plug in the battery charger and press the power button.

  • Keyboard
Desktop
The user will be able to use full-size keyboards which include a number pad.
Laptop
As laptops tend to be of smaller sizes, they do not feature a number pad on the right side. For laptops to have a number pad on the side, they tend to be bulkier and heavier.

  • Screen Size
Desktop
Desktop screens are typically 19” or bigger, and many people may opt to connect the desktop to an external screen, like a TV.
Laptop
Laptop screens would have to be smaller for its portability, hence sizes often range from 10” to 17”. However, a laptop can also connect to an external screen.

  • Power Usage
Desktop
As desktops make use of more power, they require a high wattage power supply for the multiple components. One con of the desktop is definitely when a power is out, the desktop will not be able to save any work or document in progress.
Laptop
Laptops use less power than a desktop. With smaller components, lesser power is required. Furthermore, laptops have batteries that would help the laptop stay on in times of power fluctuation.

  • Upgrading
Desktop
As a desktop is customizable and many components can be easily removed and replaced, the cases are huge to be able to provide space for easy removal and organization. This allows users to upgrade comfortably.
Laptop
The only components that can be upgraded in a laptop are memory and hard drive. Hence, if there’s any need to upgrade, the usual choice is to get a new laptop.

  • Gaming
Desktop
Desktops are able to make use of the best few graphic cards (including 2 or more at once), providing better performance for its user. This allows the user to use the desktop for gaming and other CAD applications.
Laptop
Laptop has its limitations, hence, lowering the graphics capabilities. Higher-end laptops would be able to provide better graphics, however, the heat reduction/dissipation is limited by the space allowed in the laptop case. Limited power would affect the graphic cards from running at high wattage as well.

  • Repair
Desktop
Most of the hardware can be purchased from stores or off the shelf which means repairment is much simpler.
Laptop
A replacement part for a laptop often requires ordering or calling the manufacturer. This results in a longer waiting time which is not ideal for those who use a laptop primarily.

There are many factors to consider especially if the laptop or desktop you are getting, is going to be your main computer. From cost, to portability and even down to the specs and also maintenance, one would definitely have to keep in mind what suits them best. This prevents them from overspending and having to service their computer every now and then.
